iPhone network settings are the options that control internet connections on your iPhone allowing you to connect to Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Sometimes, your iPhone may have some kind of internet or network related problems making it difficult to connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. When this happens, it means your iPhone network connection has been disrupted. Resetting an iPhone’s network settings in most cases should solve any network problems and allow it to properly connect to the internet.
Resetting network settings on your iPhone will restore configurations for all Wi-Fi, cellular networks, virtual private network (VPN) and every other network-related settings to the default settings, giving you a chance to restart from scratch. After you finish the reset, you will be automatically reconnected to your carrier but for Wi-Fi and VPN settings, you will need to manually set them up again.
Before You Reset Network Settings
Before diving in to reset your network settings, it’s important to first ensure that your iPhone connection problem is accurately diagnosed, as resetting network settings will return configurations for all Wi-Fi and cellular networks to the default settings. When you have a network connection issue with your iPhone, first make sure that your Wi-Fi router is working properly and you’re closer to it, and that your iPhone is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. If you still can’t connect after doing the above, then try the following three quick tips before resetting network settings.
Turn Airplane Mode On and Off
- Put your iPhone in Airplane Mode for like two minutes. To do that, tap Settings, then toggle the slider next to Airplane Mode to the right.
- After about two minutes, toggle the slider next to Airplane Mode to the left to turn it off.
- Try to connect again to see if your connection is now working.
Restart Your iPhone
If turning Airplane Mode on and off does not work, try restarting your iPhone by turning it off and on.
- Press and hold down the power button until you see the option to slide power off.
- Move the slide to power off to the right, wait for some seconds for your iPhone to power off.
- Next, turn it back on. To do so, press and hold down the power button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo appears.
Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi Network
If your iPhone still won’t connect, forget your Wi-Fi network and then reconnect again.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi. The network your iPhone is currently connected to should display right below the Wi-Fi setting.
- Tap the checkmark (i) beside your network name.
- Tap Forget This Network on the next screen. This will disconnect your iPhone from the network.
- Select the network you want to join.
- Enter the password, and tap Join. Try to connect again to see if your connection is now working
How to Reset Your iPhone Network Settings
If the connection problem persists, it’s time to reset your network settings. Complete the following steps on your iPhone:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Scroll down towards the end and tap Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- If prompted, enter your iPhone’s passcode.
- You will be asked to confirm your actions, tap Reset Network Settings.
- Your iPhone will reset all network settings to factory default. Once done, restart it, your iPhone will take a minute or two to restart.
- Your iPhone should automatically reconnect to your carrier. To reconnect to Wi-Fi networks, go to Settings, tap Wi-Fi and tap the network you want to join. If prompted, enter the previously stored Wi-Fi password, then tap Join.

As mentioned earlier, resetting network settings should be a last resort when troubleshooting connection problems you just can’t resolve any other way, sometimes it’s your only option, giving you the opportunity to start from scratch and possibly solve any difficult network connectivity problems.
